Chistmas shopping is like...

Christmas shopping is like being on your period. It shows up at semi-predictable intervals. It's messy and painful. And just when you think it's over, it comes back with a vengeance. Also, it usually involves the color red.

I may be done with the bulk of Christmas shopping for this year. I've selected items for my closest living relatives, and a few for friends. All that remains is to buy a bunch of random stuff I can hand out to people at the last minute when I inevitably realize I totally forgot to buy a present for so-and-so. Have a Totoro doll.

And then there's that awkward moment when you receive a surprise gift from a certain someone that definitely cost more than the gift you bought for them and now you've got to start looking for something to make up the difference...You know who you are...

Oh, wait! Do you buy Christmas cards or New Year's cards? Or do you split the difference by buying Christmas cards with Japanese writing and hope no one cares?

Next week will be the quest to get all the presents jammed into one suitcase for the flight home. Obviously not bringing any clothes this time...
